Tilt controls done right: lessons from mobile racers

August 16, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

Tilt controls are divisive, and honestly a lot of games get them wrong. But when they work, like in Dustline Rally, they feel more natural than fiddling with on-screen buttons.

The trick is adjustable sensitivity. A good racer lets you dial in how much you tilt to turn, which makes the difference between precise cornering and constant overcorrection.

I always lower the default sensitivity first, then nudge it up until steering feels effortless. Spend two minutes in the settings before you write a game off.

Short tracks help too. Tilt steering is tiring over long stretches, so the games that keep races brief tend to feel the best.
